Winning a SBID International Design Award is a high achievement – they are evaluated by leading industry experts for their technical content and aesthetic creativity while the design-conscious public also has a say in choosing the most inspiring projects!

Cronin Kitchens was proud to submit their Papahia Kitchen (Auckland, New Zealand) for this prestigious award. Since the company was formed in 1989, Cronin Kitchens has earned a reputation among its peers and clients for creating quality award winning kitchens within a wide spectrum of briefs.  The spray applicator for this project, Keith Wallace of Wallace Furniture Ltd has been in business for over 25 years. Specialising in Polyurethane 2K product application to provide high quality premium finishes for high-end residential & commercial projects. With six purpose built spray booths and a team of master spray applicators, applying Mirotone’s MIROTHANE PU 5626 White undercoat and MIROTHANE PU 5608 Pigmented Satin Topcoat the Papahia Kitchen is nothing short of a modern masterpiece.

The kitchen forms part of a transformative renovation of a large family home, jointly owned by a surgeon and an architect. The architect’s vision was for a curved kitchen island, and so the designer took this as a starting point for the design.

Given its shape, Corian was the clear choice of material to use for the construction of this complex island. Where possible, white appliances were specified and the remainder were integrated to create a seamless look. The cabinetry is both angular and curved to mimic the shape of the island.

The inspiration for the timber highlights came from the owner’s choice of bar stools. The colour and grain of the light oak adds a warmth and natural texture to an otherwise stark landscape. The timber is expressed as oak-look tiles in the island seating recess and on the splashback, as well as the open shelving in the scullery.
