Finishing Children’s Toys and Furniture. What you need to know about the coatings used

Oct 11, 2023 | News

Up until the 1st of January 2010, Australia had lacked any nation-wide enforceable legislation that prohibited or even limited any prohibited materials such as lead and other heavy metals in consumer products, especially heavy metals within children’s toys and paints. It is well established that heavy metals are toxic and can cause a range of adverse health effects ranging from cancer, kidney damage, neurological effects and learning disabilities, particularly during the developmental years of young children’s lives.

These safety hazards are not always obvious to many parents as the heavy metals found in children’s toys and paints generally cause damage when swallowed, inhaled or are absorbed through the skin. Young children are at a greater risk of heavy metal exposure through placing items in their mouths, playing with toys or chewing furniture. Young children can suffer significant illnesses depending on the degree and length of exposure.

Australian Standard AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2003 limits accessible Lead, Mercury, Selenium, Antimony, Arsenic, Barium, Cadmium and Chromium in Children’s toys. This means it is illegal to sell any toys or paints with unsafe levels of heavy metals within Australia.

Whilst all coatings in Mirotone’s range of clear and pigmented coatings for wood all comply with AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2003 (Children’s Toy Safety Requirements) and BS/EN 71-3:1995 (Safety of Toys) Part 3. Specification for migration of certain elements. We have two products that are ideally suited for this application.
