You got here from Home/Group/English/PRODUCTS/Problem Solving Guide
Sinkback
The topcoat sinks into the porous undercoat.
Cause
Preventative Action
The dry coating highlights imperfections in the underlying coats.

Apply enough filler and sealer to provide a sound base for the topcoat to be applied over.

Poor preparation of the substrate is noticeable after the top coats have been applied.
Ensure the correct sandpaper is used to prepare the wood and all sealed coats. The use of coarse sandpaper on the wood will affect the overall finished appearance of the coated panels.
Applying excessive film builds of a coating that has been reduced with a slow solvent.
Using slow thinners in large amounts while applying multiple heavy coats may result in the coating system drying with a hungry appearance.
