Patchy Colours - Stains
Colour appears uneven and non uniform.
Cause
Preventative Action
Uneven sanding of the substrate with coarse sandpaper.

Use 180 or 240 grit sandpaper on an orbital sander to achieve a uniform base or if sanding by hand always sand with the grain of the wood.

Uneven stain application.
Apply the stain in an even wet application. Remove excess stain with a clean lint free cloth to achieve a uniform finished colour.
Stain applied too dry or with a thinner that dries too fast.
Always use the correct thinner for the application technique. A slow thinner is required when a stain has to be wiped even over large areas. Apply the stain in a wet application using low air pressure.
